Falling Body

Falling Body

This is a photo of my Falling Body that I made during  Sculpture and Installation art class. This class explores some materials used to create sculptures, which include wires, tapes, woods, and many more different kinds of materials. As a student, we learn how to build and learn to use sculpture tools. This is my second project for this class and our theme is “posing”. My artwork is made of tape and plastic wrap to create a mermaid model. The subject matter because these artworks required time, very careful attention to detail. The most obvious in my work is the shape because I have to create a good body shape to make the body sculpture looks better and more defined. My artwork is mostly made from tape and plastic wrap based on Madison’s body shape. First of all, I used plastic wrap to wrap around her body parts, and then I put the tape on the plastic wrap to create the shape. Secondly, I repeatedly tapped her about 2-4 times depending on which body parts. Lastly, I used the cutting utensil to remove the “mold” from her body so I carefully cut a slit through the tape so I can free her wrapped body part. After that, I retaped the mold and attached it to other body parts. A couple of days before the art project, I watched a movie named “Little mermaid” by Disney, and I think Ariel is super cool and cute so I decided to make a sculpture of her. So I would say, Disney, inspired my artwork. My artwork is related to environmental issues. Because there are tons of trash released to the ocean each day. Even though mermaid is not real, they are the ocean mascot so if we didn’t protect and pay more attention to our environment then the mermaid would be covered by the plastics because of the amount of plastic that was released into the ocean. As an artist, I wanted to develop my shaping skill because I think there are some details of the body parts that I need to pay more attention to. This piece really helps me to develop my shaping skill because I pay more attention to the shaping part most of the time. In this artwork, I learned how to cooperate with my partner and patients to build the body sculpture. The final was exactly what I imagined, not perfect but acceptable. This art piece might influence my future artwork, to understand more art is not only about talent but it also requires certain skills that I didn’t notice before I have done this artwork. The thing that I enjoy about this project is the simpleness of it by wrapping someone’s body parts can create a whole sculpture which is super interesting to me. One more last thing I enjoy about this project is cooperating with the model and communicating with them.
