Self Portrait

Self Portrait

This is a picture of my Self-portrait project that I made in class. The main idea of the  Introduction to the Visual Arts class is to learn how to draw and create art with different art tools which include brushes, ink pens, line art, and much more different kinds of art. As a student, we learn how to draw and learn to use art tools. I would say this piece is one of my favorite projects to do, but not the best one because I made a few mistakes this time while drawing.

My artwork is my self-portrait that was drawn in ink. The subject matter is because the word that I chose for this project is “Patriots” so the title is also “Patriots”, I think it is a nice word, and the word shows braveness and support. So my title for this drawing is also “Patriots” The element that is most obvious in my work is the value because it shows the dark and light of the drawing. My artwork is made from ink and a page from an old art book that was scanned and put into a better paper material so the ink doesn’t go through while tracing and coloring. There are a couple of steps that I did to create my self-portrait.  First of all, I selected a page from an old book, identified a word or phrase that can be conveyed with facial expression, and then I traced the positive and negative space over the words, making the phrase stand out with black around it. The word that I chose inspired my artwork. My artwork expresses personal, my thinking about the patriots, who fight for us. My artwork also shows my emotion of me when I’m thinking about the people that fight and build up the country. As an artist, my goal is to be better at tracing and line art. This piece does help me with that problem because I have been struggling with line art and tracing by practicing on the draft paper and the final piece. Through this project, I learned how to line and trace on different types of pens and ink than what I normally use for line art ( sharpy pen). The final result of my project wasn’t what I really expect because I was supposed to choose another word but then I  chose a different word because I accidentally cover the word that I chose with ink. This piece teaches me to be more careful before drawing and after \drawing, every step is really important.
